Ball Valve Body Materials

Material grade is a primary procurement requirement. The correct designation must include the ASTM product specification and grade, plus whether the body is forged or cast. Many aliases are related but not interchangeable.

Technical buying guidance

Carbon and low-temperature steels

Frequently specified forged and cast groups include ASTM A105, ASTM A216 WCB, ASTM A350 LF2 and ASTM A352 LCB/LCC. Low-temperature suitability depends on the specified grade, impact requirements, heat treatment and design code.

Stainless steel and duplex

Common forged and cast groups include ASTM A182 F304/F316 and ASTM A351 CF8/CF8M. Duplex requests may specify F51/F53 or their exact UNS designations. Ensure that casting equivalents are separately identified.

Special alloys

Nickel alloys, titanium, aluminum bronze and other corrosion-resistant grades require close attention to product form and material specification. “Inconel,” “Monel” and “Hastelloy” are alloy-family or trade-name terms, not a complete purchase specification.

Material document package

For material-critical projects, ask for heat/lot traceability, EN 10204 3.1 inspection documents where specified, chemical and mechanical properties, PMI scope and corrosion or sour-service requirements.

Material grades, pressure classes, valve dimensions, tests and certification requirements must be confirmed for the actual offered configuration. No stock status or certification is implied by this page.

Frequently asked questions

Is F316 the same as CF8M?

No. F316 is a wrought/forged product designation; CF8M is a casting grade. They are different procurement specifications.

Can a material grade alone confirm valve suitability?

No. Suitability also depends on medium, temperature, pressure, trim and seat components.

What to include in your valve RFQ

Material selection must follow the process medium, temperature, pressure boundary product form and project corrosion criteria.

Please specify the exact ASTM/ASME or UNS grade for body and trim separately, and whether material testing, PMI or EN 10204 documentation is required.

Availability, suitability and inspection scope are confirmed during review of the complete valve datasheet.
